Gluten Free Beer!

To be updated and expanded regularly:

I will do my best with descriptions on this part, but I must say, I was diagnosed at 11 years old, so I don't have a heck of a lot to compare these beers to. Mostly, I can just list all the options and some bits of info. You just might have to drink a few to know if you like them!

Beers:
Gluten free beer is typically made from Sorghum and Rice.

Harvester
Hands down, the Best gluten free beer out there! Harvester is a dedicated gluten free brewing company out of Portland, OR. They also have a 100% gluten free gastropub! They make several options of beer: Dark Ale, Red Ale, IPA, and seasonal choices. They are incredible and worth checking out!

Redbridge
Distributed by Anheuser-Busch. A great, easily available go-to beer!

New Grist
A Lighter beer that is great for the summer

Green's Beers
Out of Belgium, these beers are probably the one of the closest options I've found to "regular" beer, (meaning gluten-containing beer)
They have a few options:
Dubbel Dark Ale: Made from millet, buckwheat, rice, & sorghum. This beer was very dark in color but tasted much lighter. Very enjoyable and maybe a favorite!

New Planet:
Out of Fort Collins, CO
Off Grid Pale Ale
Tread Lightly Ale

Dogfish Head Craft Brewed Ales:
Out of Milton, DE
Known for their craft beers.
Tweason'ale Gluten Free Sorghum based ale brewed with Strawberries
This is a new GF beer that is probably my current favorite! The strawberry flavor is very light. This tastes like "real beer" to me! Love it!

Omission Beers:
I'm only mentioning this because they have 2 beers and they exist, but I by no means recommend them. Omission bears are "LOW GLUTEN" beers, so they are better for people who are GF by choice, not necessity. I don't agree with these types of products because they are confusing to newly diagnosed people and many will still get sick when consuming such products. I find it to be irresponsible marketing by the companies.

Gluten Free Hard Ciders:
I consider myself a hard cider connoisseur.
Made from fermented apples or pears usually.

Angry Orchard:
Apple Ginger Hard Cider: Sweet, but also tart. A light taste of ginger. Great for a cold fall evening.

  1. Great info! I just recently was diagnosed a few months ago and also turned 21 last month! Very conflicting with the bar scene. I never know what to order.

    1. Hi Jordan, I'm glad I can help! Keep in mind that you actually have a lot of options. New GF beers are coming out all the time. I'm working on updating my blog more often about this and other info. You can also safely drink most hard alcohol, as the distillation process removes gluten. The exceptions would be things things that "mash" is added back to, for example, I believe Southern Comfort is this way. Rum, vodka, & tequila are all always safe. :)

  4. I'm so sorry. No, I've never heard of that happening. Did you have it in a bottle or was it draft? The only thing coming to mind would be cross contamination if it was in a bottle and poured into a glass, or mixed up and you drank a regular beer because someone made a mistake and poured the wrong beer. I would think if you have had it before and had no reaction, you would be ok. Is it possible you used a new lip balm or something containing gluten, or ate something while you were out that you weren't sure about?
